They continuously challenge us to be as honest, non-judgmental and forgiving as they are. The way they are reflects the way we relate to them. The more we ask of them, the more they challenge us to be authentic. When we fall short (who doesn't?) they instantly, ruthlessly, communicate this to us. When we rise to the call, they instantly, unconditionally forgive us and move into the present experience. This is an accurate metaphor of how we strive to be with our clients. Our value lies not just in the poignancy of the questions we ask, but in the way we ask them - with empathy. Empathy is often confused with sympathy. It is very different. Empathy means we relate with you from a deep understanding forged from our own struggles, failures and victories over the very powerful inner forces that want to bind us to a troubled past and recreate an unnecessarily anxious future. Empathy means we hold a space for you to expand into - knowing that all you need is already within you. We don't give you advice. We don't give you answers. We don't try to make decisions for you.
